Panasonic showcases the future of car interiors with high-tech family day trip through the Alps

Panasonic has developed a concept of what a fully autonomous car cockpit could look like, including some interesting new dashboard materials and switching devices.

There was even a video depicting a family voyaging across the Alps in the Panasonic concept, while facing each other across a fold-out table playing a board game as the autonomous car trundled along with no one at the wheel. Perhaps one day we'll learn to trust the technology like this.

"We are not aiming at pushing people into autonomous cars," Andreas Heitmann, head of Panasonic’s Infotainment division in Europe, "but want to show options which could be used on an autonomous car of the future."

While Panasonic said this would be in the not-too distant future, more immediate and interesting were its proposed touch screens, smart materials and augmented reality head-up displays. The first two took the form of resin dashboard shapes incorporating capacitive lighting and touch sensitivity. In a cockpit buck, the dashboard had no conventional switches, just attractive, lit-up areas that responded to the touch. These can include organic materials such as leather, wood and even stone.
