Find out why Australia could be in for one of the biggest snake seasons we've seen in a while.

Even the bravest of us can feel helpless near a snake! Here in Australia, we're home to some of the deadliest snakes on the planet. They love hot and dry weather, and this year, snake catchers say the arrival of El Nino means we need to be prepared for any slithery encounters. But what if you do get bitten? Deaths from snake venom are pretty rare here, but there has already been one death in Queensland this season. So, experts say even if you don't think the snake is venomous you should use the same first aid for every bite.

NEW VICTORIAN PREMIER

Victoria has a new premier! It's Jacinta Allan! She's been the Deputy Premier since last year and now after her party had a meeting today she'll step up to the top job. She's been in politics since 1999 and actually became Victoria's youngest minister ever back in 2002. Allan will start the job tomorrow but won't officially be sworn in until some time next week.

VICTORIA COMPETES IN WORLD SOLAR CHALLENGE

This is the ride that'll take a team of university students right across the country in the World Solar challenge next month! They're part of a team called ASCEND from Deakin University, and the students spent 4 years of blood, sweat, and a lot of sunshine developing and creating this car, and there's a lot that goes into it! From super light-weight components, 3D-printed parts, vegan materials, complex aerodynamics and, of course, solar panels that all have to be stitched together into something that looks and drives like a car! The World Solar challenge has been running, or driving, since the 1980s, and this year the ASCEND team will race 41 other teams from around the world starting in Darwin on October 22nd and travelling 3000 kays to Adelaide!

FORMULA 1 FEMALE DRIVER TESTS ASTON MARTIN

Now there’s not much faster than a Formula 1 car, right? Luckily British driver Jessica Hawkins knows how to handle it! She became the first female driver in almost 5 years to test an F1 car after taking the wheel for 26 laps for Aston Martin. 

ASTRONOMY PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR AWARDS

What’s faster than the speed of light? Nothing, really! Which is why these entries into the Astronomy Photographer of the Year Awards are pretty impressive. Out of 4000 spectacular entries from 64 countries, a shot of a never-before-seen oxygen arc next to the Andromeda galaxy took out the top prize.

WINGSUIT WORLD FIRST

And how would you like to try detaching from a paraglider mid-air while wearing a wingsuit? German skydiver Max Manow became the first person to do that… as opposed to the usual way like jumping off a building or cliff! He followed it up with a 100-metre free-fall before flying around a castle at the chill speed of 200KM an hour. Easy!
