Broadway could soon look a little different as city leaders move forward with new safety measures in the heart of Nashville’s entertainment district.
Metro Council approved $2.6 million this week to install Raptor bollards at the intersection of 5th Avenue and Broadway. The retractable barriers are designed to block vehicle traffic while keeping pedestrians safe.
Metro Councilmember Jacob Kupin said the move is part of the city’s broader goal of protecting the hundreds of thousands of people who visit downtown each week.
“One of our top priorities is keeping people safe, and especially in downtown Nashville,” Kupin said.
Currently, police vehicles are used to close off Broadway during busy nights and weekends. The new bollards are expected to free up those officers while still keeping crowds protected.
Officials say they considered traditional retractable bollards but ultimately chose the Raptor model because installation requires less digging and has less impact on the surrounding area.
“They’re retractable, so they can come up and down with ease. So it allows for much more flexibility with this space,” Kupin said.
Kupin added that the city is committed to its Vision Zero initiative, which aims for zero pedestrian and bicycle fatalities.
Business owners along Broadway say the change will help, but some believe more needs to be done.
“I think it’ll save the police from having to get three or four cars out there and maybe even help foot traffic as far as that goes,” said Cody Chilcutt, owner of Rippy’s Honky Tonk.
“Today is not that bad, but usually, like Fridays and Saturdays, it’s wall-to-wall out here. So yeah, it gets pretty crazy,” Chilcutt added.
The bollards will be installed as a pilot program starting in mid-November and are expected to be completed by January. The city will evaluate the project after one year and could expand it to other locations if successful.
