Alabama Hip Hop 101 is an oral history project that seeks to document the history and growth of hip-hop music and culture in the South. Episodes feature stories from unsung pioneers as well as established artists from across the region. New interviews are accompanied by flyers from classic venues and performances, rare album and CD covers, historic images, and archival footage — artifacts which help preserve the rich, unexplored history of hip-hop in the South.

In this episode: Kenny Thomas, also known as Alabama Kenny, hails from Northport, Alabama, a small town in Tuscaloosa County. Kenny Thomas fell in love with hip hop and like most independent artists, he learned every aspect of the business: writing, performing, producing, designing his own graphics, and marketing his own music as owner of Still Dirdy Ent, Dirdy Beatz, True t.e.a.m Marketing & Promotions, and 3rd Eye Grafix. His discography includes classics like “Call Grady” and “Name Kallin,” production for Nappy Roots, and a joint project with Yukmouth of the Luniz. He recently completed a joint project with Boosie Badazz called “F.EA.” He has made a significant impact on the southern hip hop scene and is a notable name in discussions about hip hop in the region.
