Ventilators assist in breathing by providing mechanical support when patients cannot breathe adequately on their own. Non-invasive ventilators use a mask or nosepiece, while invasive ventilators require an airway tube. A ventilator is needed when a patient's respiratory function is compromised, such as in cases of severe pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), or during surgery. Modes include SIMV (synchronized intermittent mandatory ventilation), Volume Control, Pressure Support, Assisted Mode, and Controlled Mode. Deciding when to remove a ventilator depends on the patient’s ability to breathe independently, normalizing blood gases, and clinical stability, often assessed through trials and weaning protocols.
