A brief history of St Mary's Church, Whitchurch, Cardiff.

The Melingriffith Works led to an increase in the population of Whitchurch in the latter half of the 18th century, and an alternative of the old church became necessary. The old church was located opposite the Fox & Hounds public house. On August 3rd 1876, the ecclesiastical commissioners granted two acres of land for the purpose of building a new church and providing additional burial ground. In anticipation of the erection of the new church, the old church had not been well maintained and fell into a state of decay. It was described in the Cardiff directory of 1882 as a small and dilapidated church. In 1883, from an appeal for funds issued by Vicar John Thomas Clarke the total cost was raised for the new church. On completion of construction the total cost of the project was £3559. The new church is made of Pennant Sandstone, with an interior lining of yellow and red bricks. The roof is covered with red machine made tiles, and the floor is also tiled. The old church was demolished in 1903. The disused churchyard was converted to a memorial garden in 1974 and still exists to this day. Many of the very old headstones have been laid as a path and stood against the boundary wall.
