2024 Leica Digital M Buyer's Guide: M11 Black Paint or Professional?

In this video let's go over the currently available Leica M11 series cameras and what the differences are between the various models. The new M11 Glossy Black is basically the standard M11 but with a brass top plate and a black paint finish. That's the only difference. Some thought the new M11 Glossy Black was based on the M11-P, which is incorrect. If so, it would be sold at a higher price point. I do hope that eventually there will be a M11-P Black Paint. All other black chrome finished M11 cameras use an aluminum top plate with a 20% weight savings. The silver chrome M11 cameras all use the traditional brass top plate.

For those considering used, the standard M11 in black chrome and aluminum top has dropped in price, thanks to the new M11 Glossy Black. Over time, the used price difference between the standard M11 and M11 Glossy Black will increase, similar to what has happened to the M10-R and M10-R Black Paint on the used market. If you're thinking about it from an investment perspective, get the M11 Glossy Black. From a shooter's perspective, I recommend the M11-P because of the various upgrades that I mention in the video.

For myself, the best value in used but with a high resolution sensor is the previous generation M10-R. It's the last flagship digital M with both a brass top and bottom plate (at least for now) and the 40MP sensor still holds up well against other modern digital cameras. The dynamic range is amazing, although it can't equal the new 60MP sensor in low light or high ISO situations. Check out my friends over at Camera West for the best prices on pre-owned Leica gear.
