Seventeen Poems of Qiupu
Li Bai

White hair stretches three thousand zhang,
It grows as long as sorrow does.
In the bright mirror, I cannot tell—
From where comes this autumn frost?
Proud ladies of Qiupu in brocade,
Hairpins adorned with double phoenixes.
But now their reflections in the mirror fade,
Scattered far, to ends unknown.
Smiling, I part from distant Mount Lu,
A single river like a painting unfolds.
Sailing feels like wandering in a dream,
Beneath a waning moon, near sandy shores.
Twin rivers flank a bright mirror’s gleam,
Two bridges rest like rainbows of color.
Smoke from homes rises among orange groves,
Autumn hues wither the phoenix trees.
Qiupu abounds with white apes,
Leaping like drifting snowflakes.
They guide their young along the boughs,
And play, toying with the moon in the water.
The apes' cries hasten my white hair,
Strands of sorrow, spun long and fine.
If I'd known life fades with its colors,
Why waste my youth on idle poetry?
The southern wind stirs my yearning heart,
The sails fly as if threading a loom.
Send word to the roads of Chang’an—
Looking back, all I see is drifting clouds.
At night, Qiupu's apes wail in grief,
Mount Huangshan turns white as my hair.
Though clear, the stream cannot stay pure,
Fair beauty is fleeting and soon will fade.
The flowing river rushes through sheer cliffs,
Thousand peaks compete, soaring steeply.
A lone sail glides past distant mountains,
As dusk falls, morning still seems near.
Snow surprises me, trapped between mountains;
Thunderous waters tumble through ravines.
In dreams, I think of the bamboo fences,
And linger with my green mirror wine cup.
By the river at Cai Shi, willows sway,
Their leaves yet to fall in the east wind.
With no maidens of the Copper Sparrow Terrace,
Why follow the immortal Wang Qiao?
At Jiangzu, a single slab of rock
Sweeps the heavens like a painted screen.
The autumn moon reflects in the emerald waters,
Cold mist gathers in the purple clarity.
The deep waters of the creek are unfathomable,
Only solitary clouds dwell within.
Amid the pines, the faint moon rises,
Its pure light shines still, for you.
By Niu Zhu, the western river at night,
No clouds linger in the azure sky.
Boarding my boat, I gaze at the autumn moon,
Longing for General Xie in vain.
O traveler, be careful not to toil too hard;
Do not worry about collecting firewood.
When mountains burn in hunting blazes,
No grass will grow again in autumn.
Thousand cliffs shed their autumn hues,
Ten thousand miles of rivers turn cold and clear.
I think of you beyond the mountains,
Where clouds drift endlessly over distant skies.
Across thousands of miles, I remember a wise friend,
My gaze fixed where the azure heavens descend.
The wild geese cannot bear such sorrow,
Even the mountain apes keen in lament.
