From down here, the whole room suddenly seemed uncomfortably alive. Merlin felt as though he had stepped into a forest teeming with creatures. Invisible gears ticked everywhere; the cauldrons seemed to hum softly, valves hissed here and there. Small lamps and buttons glowed and flickered here and there, and even in the mist on the invisible ceiling, sporadic green glowing dots buzzed around. Merlin couldn't help but think of the Aes Sidhe from the old stories – fairies or elves, beings from the Otherworld supposed to live hidden in huge fortresses under the green hills of his homeland. Or were they rather will-o'-the-wisps, luring him, the adventurous traveler, further into the opaque mist, deeper into the realm of shadows, until he never found his way out again?
In the open spaces around the many round brass and iron cauldrons, cast-iron shelves stood haphazardly, holding a selection of small, highly peculiar objects. There were many complicated-looking measuring instruments with pointers, digits, and gears that hummed and buzzed. One shelf was filled from top to bottom exclusively with jars containing various beings in bizarre positions in a peculiar yellow, jelly-like liquid – Merlin recognized numerous types of amphibians in seemingly very different stages of their development, ranging from tiny tadpoles to fully formed animals, their webbed skin between their spread little fingers and toes so delicate that light shone through. In larger vessels, newts, salamanders floated, and even larger ones housed snakes, their coiled, scaly bodies pressed tightly against the inner wall of the glass. Yellowed labels announced their Latin names, which revealed little to Merlin.
A narrow aisle formed between the shelves, branching off to the left and right. Merlin felt as though he had landed in the belly of a huge beast, a whale, and for some inexplicable reason, he felt drawn further into the room, as if the rhythmically throbbing ticking were hypnotizing him, emanating not from the instruments, but from the depths of the ship itself, as if it were his own pulsing heartbeat.
The Alchemy of Magic – Soon also in English!
The young thief Merlin ends up on board the airship of Prince Arthur Pendragon of Camelot and becomes embroiled in machinations of unprecedented proportions. In order to become a druid, he not only has to put his past behind him, but also reconcile with the arrogant prince whose fate, according to legend, is so closely intertwined with his own.🌌⚔️🌙
Contrasts and genres come together here - classic cloak and dagger adventure on a steampunk airship with philosophical depth, a bit of fantasy, science fiction and much-needed feminist and queer elements are the ingredients of this lively, new recipe for the Arthurian legend.
