In this video, Nnamdi C. Osakwe argues that college is a valuable time to explore diverse academic and research interests. Furthermore, having diverse academic experiences are useful in solving many problems society faces today, such as health inequity. Health inequities (i.e., poor air and drinking water exposure) are prevalent across the country and quality data, interdisciplinary techniques and tools are needed to address them. Bioinformatics is a field that is the nexus of statistics, computer science and biomedical sciences. As a result, these interdisciplinary techniques, and unique perspectives, can be instrumental in addressing health inequities. Osakwe explains that, ultimately, prioritizing quality data, diverse experiences and viewpoints is key in solving complex “wicked” problems related to health inequities. Additionally, leveraging past experiences in and outside of the classroom can benefit students when deciding on future career paths.

Nnamdi C. Osakwe is a Bioinformatics PhD student at NCSU whose research focuses on using bioinformatics to study environmental health.
