Binyamin Netanyahu faced a walkout from dozens of delegates at the United Nations before his address, which he said was being broadcast from loudspeakers in Gaza and beamed into every mobile phone there. Speaking to a partially full hall, with empty chairs at the Iranian desk, the Israeli prime minister began by addressing those present and the “families of hostages languishing” in Gaza.

Netanyahu, known for his props and stunts during UN speeches, wore a large badge with a QR code he said would explain “why we fight and why we must win”.

Having flown in by a circuitous route seemingly to avoid member countries of the International Criminal Court that has a warrant for his arrests for war crimes, he said that Israel was fighting back as “any self-respecting government would do” but “many world leaders buckled under pressure” to oppose its “seven-front war” against its enemies in the region.

“I want to do something I’ve never done before, I want to speak to those hostages through loudspeakers — I’ve surrounded Gaza with loudspeakers in the hope that those hostages will hear me,” Netanyahu said.

He began a few minutes later than scheduled because of the walkout and the sound of jeering and clapping as the chair repeatedly called for order in the room.
