Big Brother & The Holding Company formed in San Francisco USA in 1965 as part of the same psychedelic music scene that produced the Grateful Dead, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Jefferson Airplane and Country Joe and The Fish. After some initial personnel changes, Big Brother & The Holding Company became well known with the classic lineup of vocalist Janis Joplin, guitarists Sam Andrew and James Gurley, bassist Peter Albin, and drummer Dave Getz. …Big Brother’s first single, "All Is Loneliness/ Blind Man”, was released on the Mainstream record label in October of 1966. Both songs on the single also appeared on the band's first Lp, simply titled “Big Brother & The Holding Company”, which wasn’t released until August 1967. ... The song featured in this video, “All Is Loneliness “ is a cover, of sorts, of Louis Thomas Hardin who was professionally known as “Moondog”. Hardin first released the song “All Is Loneliness” way back in 1956 on his third Lp, titled “More Moondog”. Needless to say Big Brothers version is quite different from Moondog's… After Big Brother’s incredible performance at Monterey Pop Festival in 1967, Big Brother & The Holding Company released “Cheap Thrills” in August 1968, one year after their debut album. “Cheap Thrills’ reached number one on the Billboard chart in its eighth week in October. At the end of the summer of 1968, just after the release of Cheap Thrills, Janis Joplin announced that she was leaving Big Brother in the fall of that year. ….Today Janis Joplin is considered one of the greatest rock/blues vocalists of all time. As of this posting, original members of Big Brother , Dave Getz and Peter Albin along with several other musicians are still carrying the torch and performing as “Big Brother & The Holding Company”.
