CNN - Donald Trump, the former President of the United States, has been indicted on criminal charges by a federal grand jury as part of special counsel Jack Smith's investigation into election interference during the 2020 presidential election. The charges against Trump include conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, obstruction of and attempt to obstruct an official proceeding, and conspiracy against rights.

The indictment alleges that for over two months following the November 3, 2020 election, Trump spread false claims about outcome-determinative fraud in the election and asserted that he had won, despite knowing these claims were false. The purpose of disseminating these falsehoods was to legitimize his baseless claims, foster an atmosphere of distrust and anger, and erode public faith in the election process.

The indictment further states that Trump's actions led to the unprecedented assault on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, as Congress was certifying President Joe Biden's victory. Trump and his co-conspirators allegedly exploited the violence on January 6 by intensifying their efforts to convince members of Congress to delay the certification of the election results.
