Erik Verlinde proposed that gravity is not a fundamental force but an entropic force, similar to how a stretched rubber band returns to a state of maximal entropy. Verlinde's theory implies that space and time themselves emerge from quantum entanglement, and gravity can be understood as arising from entropy changes, with "holographic screens" analogous to event horizons that define emergent spacetime. He linked gravity to quantum information and the Unruh effect, positing that acceleration generates temperature from a vacuum.

The theory has faced challenges. It requires a specific form of the Newtonian potential, leading to complications when dealing with multiple bodies (N-body problem), where each pair of particles would need a separate entropy and temperature, which is impractical. Verlinde also proposed gravity as an entropic force using the Unruh temperature, but this contradicts gravity being a conservative force unless certain constraints are met. Moreover, Verlinde's use of negative entropy is controversial.

Physicists such as Ted Jacobson and T. Padmanabhan developed less ambitious theories that use thermodynamics to derive Einstein's equations without the need for real temperatures and holographic screens, avoiding Verlinde’s issues with the N-body problem.

Critics, including Richard Feynman, have raised concerns about entropic gravity causing friction with spacetime, as thermal exchanges with a heat bath imply drag, which classical gravity does not have. Although Hawking radiation causes some dissipation in spacetime, the effect is negligible for planets and stars. While Verlinde's theory has attracted interest, it has not yet provided a coherent model of gravity.
