crucial engagement in the Second Macedonian War, in which the Roman general Titus Quinctius Flamininus controlled the territorial ambitions of Philip V of Macedonia and strengthened the Roman influence in the Greek world.

Although the battle had left Philip under the mercy of Rome, Flamininus proposed generous terms - namely that Philip should give up all his dependencies outside Macedonia, but retain his throne. He was further obliged to reduce the size of his army, abandon all his ornate ships except five, and pay an allowance of 1,000 talents. At the Isthmian Games in 196, Flamininus declared that all Greek states that had been subject to Philip were free and independent of his rule.
