Program Notes:
Vamp (2011, rev. 2018) refers to a musical device common in jazz and popular music in which musicians improvise over a repeated pattern or chord progression. Vamps typically serve as interludes or transitions, often building up energy over time (this is especially true in gospel music), eventually crescendoing to a climax. Vamp subverts this paradigm by building up a similar energy, but cutting it off at the last moment. Vamp was original written for clarinet, violin, cello and piano, but this new arrangement for Latitude 49 appends percussion (drum set and vibes) and alto saxophone.
