Smart cities in action: how to build resilient communities?

Nearly 70% of the world’s population – or about 2.5 billion people – is projected to live in urban areas by 2050, according to the UN Department of Social and Economic Affairs. The growth of urban populations advances alongside challenges. Middle Eastern and African cities are facing challenges such as water scarcity, traffic congestions, polluted air, and waste management. Digital tools sit at the forefront of city-level solutions to tackle those challenges and improve the quality of life of their communities. The technology that will drive cities to operate more sustainably and efficiently already exists. Today, many examples of applications of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), or cloud computing can be found in cities all over the world. Technology will have a role alongside urban and climate policies to tackle effectively the most pressing issues in cities. The interest on smart city technologies has grown visible among many of the largest cities in the Middle East and Africa (MEA), which are increasingly adopting tech applications for city services and planning. With the focus on smart city technology set to expand, which tools can better help MEA cities address environmental challenges? What are the main challenges to be tackled at a city level? Which best practice cases are better suited to the challenges in the region?
