Located in the heart of Sri Lanka is the beautiful city of Kandy
Opposite the Dalada Palace stands the serene and majestic Bogambara Lakes, which has an impressive historical significance. An artificial water body that has graced the landscape of Kandy for centuries. Its creation dates back to the reign of King Sri Wickrama Rajasingha, the last king of the Kandy Kingdom in the early 19th century.A lover of art, architecture and beauty, King Rajasingha envisioned a grand palace complex enshrining Lord Buddha's tusks. To enhance the magnificence of the palace and create a serene atmosphere, he ordered the construction of a large lake in front of the palace grounds.The tank served both practical and aesthetic purposes. It was designed to provide a protective moat around the palace, acting as a barrier against invasion. In addition, it served as a reservoir providing water for various purposes such as irrigation.
The construction of the lake was an important undertaking involving the labor and skills of thousands of workers. They dug into the earth and created a huge basin spanning over 60 acres with a complex system of channels and levees to control the flow of water.Water from the Mahaweli River, Sri Lanka's longest river, is drawn through an extensive network of canals.
Madduma Bandara Ehelapola often known as Madduma Bandara was the second son of Ehelepola Maha Disawe of Sabaragamuwe District under King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe of Kandy, Sri Lanka. Madduma Bandara and his family were executed by the king for treason in 1814.
* Madduma Bandara's family *
Madduma Bandara was born in Kandy in 1806 to Ehelepola Maha Disawe and Ehelepola Kumarihami. He had an elder brother (Loku Bandara) and two sisters (Tikiri Menike and Dingiri Menike). His uncle was a prominent Udara leader who signed the Udara Agreement in Kandy on March 2, 1815 in Kappetipola District.At that time King Sri Wickramarajasinghe knew that Ehelapola was supporting the rebellion against the British rule while in Sabaragamuwa district. The king ordered the arrest of the Ehalapola family while Ehalapola was away from Kandy.The king could not arrest Ehelapola because he was in the custody of the British in Colombo. The king arrested Ahelapola's wife and children. His sons were beheaded on May 17, 1814. Ahelapola's wife Kumarihami and daughters were forcibly drowned in Bogambara Lake and killed with huge stones around their necks. While Madduma Bandara's brother was afraid of facing death, he went forward asking the executioner to behead him first.
