The smell of gasoline mixed with the scent of aged leather was suffocating. It was pitch black, a darkness so absolute that for a moment, I forgot where I was. Then, the panic set in. My hands scrabbled against the soft, felt lining of the enclosed space, my fingernails catching on the fabric. I was curled into a fetal position, my knees pressed tight against my chest. The corset of my custom Vera Wang wedding gown, which had made me feel like a queen just an hour ago, was now a cage crushing my ribs. I could barely breathe. The car hit a bump, and my head slammed against the hard wall of the trunk. I bit my lip to keep from screaming, tasting copper and expensive lipstick.
