In this episode of Khaane Mein Kya Hai, Kunal Vijayakar steps into the vibrant world of Kerala Quarters—a Mumbai restaurant that brings the authentic taste of Kerala, from north to south, to the city’s bustling heart.
Tucked inside Lower Parel’s Mathuradas Mill Compound, Kerala Quarters is not just a restaurant—it’s a journey through the diverse, spice-laden and coconut-rich culinary landscape of ‘God’s Own Country.’ From seafood to soul food, their kitchen serves up regional favourites that are both comforting and bold.
Kunal begins his meal with a generous Seafood Thali—a banana-leaf-style spread filled with traditional accompaniments, rice, and a variety of fish and shellfish dishes that celebrate Kerala’s coastal bounty. He then dives into the classic breakfast pairing of Puttu and Kadala Curry—steamed cylinders of rice flour layered with coconut, served with a peppery black chickpea curry.
Next, he tries the soft Pidi rice dumplings in a creamy Kozhi Pal (chicken) Curry, followed by delicate Idiyappam (string hoppers) paired with a rich, Malabari-style Mutton Kurma. To spice things up, there’s the zingy and addictive Chemmeen Achaar (prawn pickle) and crispy, golden Kappa Vadas made from tapioca.
Adding a modern twist to tradition, Kerala Quarters also serves Inji Puli Wings, chicken wings tossed in a tangy ginger-tamarind glaze, and Attirachi Malli Kurumulaku, a bold lamb curry seasoned with fresh coriander and black pepper. For those who prefer subtlety, the mild and fragrant Fish Moilee Curry brings together soft fish fillets and creamy coconut milk.
Kunal also samples the sizzling Chemmeen Koonthal Tawa Roast, a deliciously roasted combo of prawns and squid, along with perfectly charred Grilled Jumbo Prawns. The comforting Appam with Egg offers a soft centre and lacy edges with a sunny-side-up surprise.
Of course, no Kerala feast is complete without biryani—and the Mutton Calicut Biryani delivers just that: tender meat, short-grain rice, and warm spices cooked dum-style. And for a truly regional specialty, there’s the indulgent Tharavu Mappas—a duck curry slow-cooked in a spiced coconut gravy, hailing from the backwaters of Kuttanad.
All in all, Kerala Quarters is a slice of Kerala served with honesty and heart—bringing traditional toddy shop favourites and regional classics to the streets of Mumbai with zero compromise on authenticity.
