In this episode of our series of bonsai techniques, we will be covering the basics of winter maintenance of Japanese maples with branch reduction and canopy cleanup. The main purpose of branch reduction is to reduce the amount of branch structure to reduce knuckling and to expose light to the interior structure which is normally shaded out and becomes weak. This technique is used to help advanced trees or trees in the refinement stage. This technique should not be utilized on weak, young, or trees growing out as it will stop the growth of those branches. This video will be in conjunction with a series where we will dive deeper into Japanese maple species. If you enjoy these videos please like, subscribe, and leave a comment below!
