Watch Jacqueline Olive, director of documentary Always in Season and creator of Always in Season Island discuss using Second Life to give users an experiential understanding of America’s horrifying history of lynching.

Always in Season Island is one of 16 pioneering legacy projects honored as part of the Peabody’s newest category, Digital and Interactive Storytelling. The team recreated the August 7th lynching of Marion, Indiana in 1930 for online audiences to explore. 10,000 white men, women, and children came to watch the torture and murder of two African American men, Thomas Shipp and Abram Smith as well as the 16 year old, James Cameron, who narrowly escaped.

Respected for its integrity and revered for its standards of excellence, the Peabody is an honor like no other for television, podcast/radio, interactive and digital media. In 2021, The Peabody Awards introduced the expansion of its award categories to recognize storytelling achievements across interactive and immersive categories.
