This is an excerpt from a rare performance by Some Other Country, acknowledged by many musicians and a host of fans in the first decade of this century as one of the finest contemporary instrumental groups in the UK. A quartet that primarily features compositions by Roy Powell (keyboards) and some from Mike Walker (guitar), the group moves between controlled tensile fusion and improvising abandon, pulling together many strands from jazz and rock. The improvisational highs of Powell and Walker are built on the strong but elastic structure of Gary Culshaw's electric bass and Steve Gilbert's drums.

After studies in piano and composition at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester, Roy Powell first came to prominence in 1994 with his debut recording A Big Sky which was hailed as "a real bench mark in British contemporary electric jazz" by Jazz on CD. He then emigrated to Oslo, Norway where he first collaborated on an album of advanced free improvised music --Holus Roy Powell Trio which was described as " an outstanding success" by Jazz journal International.

Salford born guitar player Mike Walker has played and recorded with George Russell, Peter Erskine, Steve Swallow, Kenny Wheeler, John Taylor and performed with Dave Holland, Tal Farlow, Vince Mendoza, Anthony Braxton, Bill Frisell and many others.

Mike plays regularly in the UK, Europe and around the world as well as teaching at the Liverpool Institute for the Performing Arts (LIPA).

For several years Gary Culshaw and Steve Gilbert have been among the most highly respected rhythm section players in the North West of England.
