As the 7th lunar month came to an end, the Bercham Da Di Gong temple in Bercham (巴占大帝宫) marked the close of the Hungry Ghost Festival with a special street procession.

The King of Hades was represented by a large effigy, which was carried through the streets of Bercham. The purpose of this journey was to remind the wandering spirits that their time on earth was over and that they needed to return to the afterlife.

For two hours, the procession moved through the Bercham neighbourhood, with the sounds of drums and cymbals echoing through the streets. When the procession returned to the temple, the final part of the ceremony took place.

The effigy of the King of Hades, along with paper offerings like boats and other items, was set on fire. The flames were a symbol of the King of Hades returning to the Netherworld, marking the end of the Hungry Ghost Festival.

This ritual is more than just an exciting end to the festival; it also signifies that the time when spirits roam the earth has come to an end.
