The series of U-S and British bombing attacks on Iraq have unleashed a wave of anger across the Arab world.

Several hundred students demonstrated outside the U-S embassy in Cairo and the U-S University in the Egyptian capital on Thursday.

The protest turned violent when police moved in.

In the West Bank town of Ramallah, a young Palestinian protester was shot dead by Israeli soldiers.

Hundreds of students swarmed out of the American University on the Cairo campus to march to the nearby U-S embassy.

But the police were ready for them and there were violent clashes.

One student explained what happened.

Security sources said extra riot police stood guard outside university premises.

At the American embassy, police tore banners away from a score of Egyptian human rights activists.

A five year-old held up a placard reading: "Don't kill my friends in Iraq".

The Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has previously opposed the use of force to force Iraq to comply with U-N Security Council resolutions.

He did not comment in person on Thursday, but a presidential statement called for action to stop the situation getting worse.

The Cairo-based Arab League will hold an emergency meeting this weekend at Baghdad's request to discuss the air strikes.

Anger also boiled over in the West Bank on Thursday, only days after Clinton's historic visit to the area.

Then, Palestinians welcomed the U-S president.

Now, angered by the launch of air strikes in Iraq, demonstrators chanted "Death to Clinton."

In Ramallah, Palestinian police stood back for more than an hour while about 200 teenagers threw stones.

One young Palestinian was killed in the clashes.

19-year-old Mohammed Ahmed Daoud was rushed to hospital, where he died from his injuries.

Doctors said 16 more Palestinians were injured by rubber bullets in clashes around Ramallah.

In Bethlehem, where Clinton had sung along with a children's choir just two days before, around 20 school children threw stones at Israeli soldiers.

Palestinian policemen dispersed the stone throwers after a few minutes.

More demonstrations are planned in Gaza and Ramallah.
