In 1907, at the young age of 24, Veer Savarkar penned his first book, "The Indian War of Independence 1857," challenging the British colonial narrative by portraying the 1857 uprising as India's first struggle for freedom. Celebrating the joint rebellion of Hindus and Muslims, Savarkar emphasized their shared heritage and united fight for independence. He praised leaders like Maulvi Ahmed Shah and placed nationalism above religion.

However, Savarkar's views underwent a significant transformation during his imprisonment. In 1911, Savarkar was sentenced to two life terms (50 years) and sent to the dreaded Cellular Jail in Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The inhumane conditions and brutal treatment by the predominantly Muslim prison staff, led by the notorious jail superintendent James Berry, deeply affected him. Hindu prisoners faced severe persecution, including being forced to convert to Islam under extreme duress.

Savarkar's experiences in jail, detailed in Vikram Sampat's biography "Savarkar: Echoes from a Forgotten Past," reveal his shift from Indian nationalism to Hindu nationalism. Witnessing forced conversions, he started the Shuddhi movement within the prison to reconvert those who had been compelled to change their faith.

In 1923, Savarkar authored "Hindutva," redefining nationalism based on the concepts of "Pitribhumi" (fatherland) and "Punyabhumi" (holy land). After spending 11 years in the Cellular Jail and 2 more years in another prison, Savarkar was finally released. His prison experiences convinced him of the importance of Hindu participation in the military to protect India's future.

The transformation of Savarkar's ideology is also depicted in the 1996 Malayalam film "Kalapani," which won four National Awards.
