PML-N leader Attaullah Tarar was released on Friday after a brief detention at Wazirabad's City Police Station, party leader Saira Afzal Tarar said.

The government and PML-N have made different claims on the matter, with the former terming it voluntary detention, while the former said that Tarar was arrested.

Police had stopped a PML-N convoy in Gujranwala, in the jurisdiction of NA-75, in which MNA Javed Latif, Tarar, and other leaders were present.

After checking, police reportedly found a weapon on PML-N Gujranwala president's gunmen, following which the Law Enforcement Agency shifted him to their vehicle.

Tarar, Mustansar Gondal, and another PML-N leader, reacting to the move, told police officers that they would go along with their workers. After which, they were taken into custody.

Following the arrest, PML-N workers and MPAs staged a sit-in outside the City Police Station demanding their workers and leaders' release.

'Voluntary arrest'
SSP Operations, Gujranwala, speaking to Geo News, said that "only the people bearing weapons were arrested, however, the PML-N leaders came voluntarily".

The PML-N leader, along with his workers, has been taken to City Police Station Wazirabad. Tarar was in Daska for the by-election's campaign along with several other PML-N leaders.

Speaking to Geo News, Bukhari said that the party had not violated any coronavirus SOPs that the government had prescribed.

'Kidnapped'
Meanwhile, PML-N spokesperson Marriyum Aurangzeb termed his arrest an act of "kidnapping" as the police booked him "without an arrest warrant".

The spokesperson, speaking to Geo News, said that the "fascist government" was taking such steps as they were aware of their "failure" in the by-elections.

Aurangzeb said that Tarar had "no case pending against him anywhere", adding that the authorities had "nabbed him as he was an active member in organising the by-election's campaign".

She said that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) should take notice of the arrest, claiming that this was "pre-poll rigging." The PML-N spokesperson demanded Tarar's immediate release.

Aurangzeb said that PML-N Vice-President Maryam Nawaz is also scheduled to address a public rally in Daska, tomorrow. "This is why they are afraid and have arrested Tarar."

Tarar vows to respond to 'every injury in kind'
Furthermore, PML-N leader Attaullah Tarar vowed that he would respond to "every injury in kind", after he was released following his brief detention.

"[Police] attacked us as they stopped [our convoy] for checking the weapon's license," he said, adding that the officers allegedly assaulted a party leader's employees.

Tarar said that as he tried to resolve the matter, police nabbed him as well. "Police thrashed my driver and bystanders who were filming the incident."

'Not arrested'
On the contrary, Special Assistant to Chief Minister Punjab Firdous Ashiq Awan, said that Tarar had voluntarily gotten himself detained, therefore, "there he was not released, as it was not an arrest".

The SACM said "political games are tactics" of the PML-N and they have "always paid a heavy price for it".
