South-East Interior Weather Update – Fire Weather & Dry Conditions

High-based thunderstorms are moving through the south-east interior following the breakdown of Ex-TC Luana.
Combined with extreme temperatures and gusty, dry storm activity, this pattern continues to elevate fire weather risk from south-east South Australia into Victoria and New South Wales.

Minimal rainfall is expected across the broader southeast until at least late April, as dry conditions persist into March 2026.
Rainfall models have been misleading since late winter 2025 and continue to under-perform.

Confidence in rainfall signals remains low for the greater SE interior, including any rainfall potential from Tropical Low 18U later in the period.

South Australia
• Fire danger ratings are high to extreme across much of South Australia, including Eyre Peninsula, Murraylands, Upper and Lower South East and Mount Lofty Ranges, with significant elevated fire weather conditions forecast.
• Total fire bans have been declared in parts of the state as extreme heat and dry conditions continue.

Victoria
• Fire danger ratings show high to extreme fire danger in multiple districts — particularly in Wimmera, North Central, North East and South West — with dangerous fire weather conditions persisting.
• Total fire bans are in effect across significant areas of Victoria, with crews responding to widespread and ongoing fire activity.

New South Wales
• Fire danger ratings in inland NSW are elevated, including extreme ratings in Central and Northern Slopes, with many other districts at high fire danger.
• Hot, dry and windy conditions are compounding fire risk across southern and western NSW as heatwave conditions persist.
