Swimmer’s Ear (Otitis Externa) | Risk Factors, Causes, Signs & Symptoms, Diagnosis, Treatment

Swimmer’s ear (also known as otitis externa) is a relatively common infection of the external auditory canal (external ear). Many factors can increase the risk of developing swimmer’s ear, including swimming, use of ear buds, etc. Most times, the cause of swimmer’s ear is due to an infection with particular bacterial species, although some other microorganisms can cause swimmer’s ear, including some species of fungi (causing Otomycosis). In this lesson, we discuss the pathophysiology behind why swimmer’s ear occurs, including a long list of risk factors, the signs and symptoms of swimmer’s ear, how it’s diagnosed and how it’s treated.
