This magical fantasy by 19th century French guitarist and composer Napoléon Coste is performed by guitarist Philipp Seidel. A long piece, full of drama and great musical ideas.
Unfortunately, the subject of the fantasy is very serious and topical. It is about war, more specifically the Crimean War of 1853-1856, which many historians consider to be the real First World War. Many wars were fought in many places over many years. In particular, this fantasy is about the French army that marched to Sewastopol for the final battle. It returned victorious, but with very high casualties. The piece begins with a beautiful introduction (0:03). The intro is followed by the section 'Le Depart' (2:09), which is reminiscent of the French army leaving for Sewastopol. This section is made up of several shorter sections, each showcasing different aspects of the guitar's musical and technical abilities, leading up to the final battle at Sewastopol (3:40). Halfway through the piece the third major section entitled 'Le Retour' begins (4:02). It simply means 'the return' of the French army from their siege of Sewastopol. A march-like character begins this section, which goes through a whirlwind of emotions until the end (8:42), ending the piece in E minor. The work uses great musical ideas to deal with this contrast between positive feelings of victory and very painful feelings of loss. The fact that the Fantasia begins with a beautiful introduction in E major, but ends in the variation key of E minor, shows me that war always involves loss, whether you win or lose.
