St Helena Airport Runway Designator Change Feb 2022

Runway designators at St Helena Airport were changed in Feb 2022 from 20 & 02, to 19 & 01. This included removing and repainting the large numbers on the runway itself and changing the designator signage on the taxiways.
St Helena Airport’s CEO and Accountable Manager, Gwyneth Howell, gives an overview of the work being undertaken, and the CNS Manager, Marten Fourie, leads the team tasked with sandblasting away the old numbers and painting on the new designators.
This has come about because the earth's magnetic field is constantly changing, and while large-scale changes, such as a complete reversal of the magnetic field, happen over several thousand years, smaller changes over shorter periods affect all forms of navigation. In aviation, Earth's changing magnetic field affects airport operations and causes runway names to change.
