Cold air rolled across the wide concrete apron of the joint operations base, slipping through the open seams of jackets and settling into bone. Floodlights buzzed overhead, casting tall white cones across drifting dust and the faint shimmer of exhaust hanging near the main gate. Inside the small guard shack, two young soldiers leaned back in their chairs, half-watching the monitors, half-laughing at something on one of their phones.

A lone figure approached from the darkness.

She walked at an even pace, a small duffel slung over one shoulder, boots crunching softly against gravel near the edge of the pavement. The closer she came, the more one of the guards’ eyes followed her, moving from her boots to her uniform, then to her face. He tilted his head slightly, the look already forming before she reached the barrier.

“Visiting personnel use the side gate,” he said, flicking two fingers toward the far fence without standing.

Someone behind him let out a quiet chuckle.

She stopped.

For a brief moment, it seemed like she might turn away. Instead, she stepped closer to the scanner, reached into her pocket, and calmly placed her Common Access Card against the reader.

The scanner hesitated.

Not the quick beep of rejection. Not the cheerful confirmation tone either.

Just a low, sustained hum.

The guard smirked, already preparing whatever joke he planned to make next.

The barrier didn’t move.

A strange stillness settled over the lane, thick and uncomfortable.
