Looking for abstract painting ideas that break you out of a creative block? In this video, I share a quick abstract painting demo inspired by something totally ordinary—and challenge you to guess what it is before the big reveal at the end!

This kind of exercise is one of my favorite ways to explore abstract painting techniques. Instead of waiting for some grand idea to strike, I start with an image of an everyday item and use it as a loose jumping-off point for shape, texture, and color. The result? A spontaneous, low-pressure piece of art that might surprise you.

In this painting demo, I use a limited palette including Payne’s gray, yellow ochre, and Naples yellow, along with a few water-soluble pastels. But more importantly, I focus on how using ordinary inspiration from our daily lives—like a cracked mug, a slice of cake, or a wrinkled shirt—can spark fresh creative energy.
