What is a Research Help Appointment?

Research Help Appointments are one-on-one meetings with a librarian or archivist.
They typically last between 20 and 40 minutes.
We are trained in how to do effective research, and we love meeting with students.
Can I meet with someone online?
Yes! Appointments are available via Zoom and in-person.
When can I meet with someone?
Appointments are generally available on weekdays between 9am and 5pm.
With the online calendar, you can choose the time that works best for you.
Why would I make a Research Help Appointment?
If you are stuck and con’t find “good sources” for your paper/project.
Don’t struggle on your own for hours! We’d love to help!
You have questions about using the library website or one of our databases.
You are researching a really specific or hard-to-find topic.
You want help from a subject expert or want to explore the archives.
We can help you determine if we have good resources for a topic, or if it is too broad or too narrow.
It’s been a while since you last did academic research.
That’s okay! We’d love to give you a refresher in research methods and demonstrate some newer tools.
Will you help me write or edit my paper?
We’d love to connect you with the ARC or the Portland Writing Center for help with the writing process, citations, or editing.
How do I make a Research Help Appointment?
Select Research in the Help menu on the library website.
Which person should I choose?
We recommend meeting with the librarian assigned to your class’ subject area.
If you are interested in primary source research or Quaker/GFU history, choose the archivist.
If you can’t meet with the subject specialist, that’s okay! All of our consultants offer expert assistance.
Do I have to fit in these boxes?
Please give us as much of the requested information as you can!
The more we know ahead of time, the better prepared we’ll be for your appointment.
How can I prepare for my Research Help Appointment?
You don’t have to prepare for a research help appointment, but you might want to bring the following:
Notes on any searching you’ve already done, including questions and anything useful you’ve found on your own.
A copy of your assignment instructions.
Your computer or something to take notes with.
A snack for the librarian (just kidding-actually, no food or drink in the archives).
What can I expect to happen in my Research Help Appointment?
We’ll ask you to talk about your research - what you’re working on, what questions you have, what you may know already.
Every appointment is unique. We might show you cool tools or techniques, Unser a quick question, or we may offer to search together and talk through your results.
We’ll have a conversation. You bring what you know about your assignment and topic, and we’ll help you achieve your goals.
