Rishi Kashyap is one of the most revered sages in Hindu tradition. He is considered among the Saptarishis (seven great sages) and also holds the title of a Prajapati, meaning the progenitor of creation. According to ancient scriptures like the Puranas, Rishi Kashyap was the son of Sage Marichi and the grandson of Lord Brahma. He had many wives, including Aditi, Diti, Kadru, and Vinata. From these wives were born various divine and mythical beings:

From Aditi, the mother of the Devas (gods), came Indra, Surya, and other celestial beings.

From Diti, the mother of Daityas (demons), came powerful asuras like Hiranyakashipu and Hiranyaksha.

From Kadru, came the Nagas (serpents).

From Vinata, were born Aruna (the charioteer of the Sun) and Garuda, the divine eagle and vehicle of Lord Vishnu.

This is why Rishi Kashyap is called the forefather of many races, representing both good and evil, devas and asuras, humans and non-humans.

In Hindu society, Gotra represents the lineage or family line traced back to an ancient sage. The Kashyap Gotra is one of the most widespread gotras, with many Hindu families tracing their ancestry to Rishi Kashyap. Even today, people with Kashyap Gotra consider the sage as their spiritual ancestor.

Rishi Kashyap is also connected with the land of Kashmir, which according to legends, derives its name from “Kashyap-Mira” (the lake of Kashyap). It is believed that Kashyap Rishi drained a massive lake to make Kashmir habitable for humans.
