Touring Chiang Khong Thailand

Chiang Khong is a small district in Northern Thailand. This district was historically important for trade and communication with local hill tribes and Northern Laos & is now a sleepy-traveler haven for border crossings into Laos, visa runs, and cruising along the Mekong River. Chiang Khong is small, but not without it’s charm.

From Huay Xai, the Laotian city on the opposite side of the Mekong, you can reach Luang Prabang in 2 days by a slow boat or in 13 hours on a bus. Either way, Chiang Khong is the place to lay your head when you’re preparing to head into Laos.

We had a few preparations to make before our trip along the Mekong and decided to walk around the sleeping town. Touring Chiang Khong Thailand is best done by bicycle or scooter. The sidewalks are non-existent and because of the age of the city, the roads are rather narrow. There were a few times that it felt like we were playing frogger with some of the bigger trucks and delivery vans on the road.
