As POW! WOW! Worcester approaches its fourth year producing New England’s largest street art festival in 2019; festival organizers release a remastered copy of the 2018 festival which added 47 new pieces of public art to its rapidly growing portfolio over the course of 10 days from August 31 to September 9, 2018. With more than 37 contributing artists from around the globe representing seven different countries and various ethnic and cultural backgrounds, POW! WOW! Worcester celebrates the diversity captured in its street art collection as highlighted in this companion video directed and produced by LA videographer Ulises Roman.

Since 2016 POW! WOW! Worcester has curated over 115 pieces of public art, consisting of 89 murals and more than 26 seasonal and permanent installations, and now maintains the largest collection of murals in New England.

Local and visiting artists travel to Worcester, MA to paint for POW! WOW! Worcester as part of the POW! WOW! Worldwide network of festivals founded by Jasper Wong in 2011. Led by co-directors Jessica Walsh and Lisa Drexhage, the POW! WOW! Worcester local organizing committee is made up of city residents, students and business professionals whose mission is to encourage walkability and enhanced connectivity between different neighborhoods in the city, advocate for youth arts education, stimulate dialogue, inspire change, promote diversity and inclusion, contribute to a greater quality of life and create a genuine sense of community through public art.

With the help of videographer Ulises Roman, POW! WOW! Worcester brings diversity to the forefront of public art and focuses on the person behind the art. “For most people, public art is consumed after the festival has come and gone,” said Drexhage. “While the art itself is subjective and open to interpretation, we want to ensure that the artist and their point of view are not forgotten or disregarded,” she continued.
