Can Journalists Demand CCTV from Police? Supreme Court Rules”
Reporting in a police station has always been a challenge for journalists. Many times the police threaten journalists that they cannot operate a camera inside the police station, cannot make a recording or cannot reveal the truth related to the arrest. But the truth is that the law protects both journalists and ordinary citizens. Many decisions of the Supreme Court and High Court prove that this “threat to teach the law” of the police is often a lie.

Right to CCTV footage – Paramveer Singh Saini case (2020)
The Supreme Court ordered in the case of Paramveer Singh Saini vs Baljit Singh (2020) that it is necessary to install CCTV cameras in every police station and investigation agency office in the country.
• These cameras are to be installed at entry, exit, lockup, SHO room, corridor, station hall, outside the washroom • The footage should be preserved for at least 12 to 18 months. • It is the SHO's responsibility to ensure that the cameras are always working and the data is safe.
