Explained: Who Is Sri Lanka's New President, Gotabaya Rajapaksa

Gotabaya Rajapaksa took oath as Sri Lanka’s seventh President. The man who is credited for crushing the LTTE in 2009, will be closely watched by the international community, including India. A former lieutenant colonel who served two decades in the Sri Lankan Army, Gotabaya later worked as a technocrat in the US from 1992 to 2005, before returning home to take charge as Defence Secretary under his brother Mahinda Rajapakasa’s presidency.
