On June 4, a 2000-people-strong mob torched an ambulance burning three people alive in the Iroisimba area of Imphal West. The ambulance was taking 7-year-old Tonsing Hangsing, accompanied by his mother and aunt, to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Imphal.

Tonsing had suffered a bullet injury to his head and could not be treated at the Assam Rifles camp in Kangchup, where the family was taking shelter along with the others from their village.

Tonsing’s father Joshua is a Kuki, while his mother Meena (40) and Lydia (37) belonged to the Meitei community. In view of the ethnic attacks, the family decided it would be safest if Tonsing was accompanied to the hospital by his mother and her friend.

The ambulance, however, was waylaid by civilians at Isoisemba and set ablaze, killing all three.

Over the next two days, Joshua ran from pillar to post to learn the whereabouts of his wife and son. In an exclusive interview with EastMojo, the 45-year-old shared his ordeal as well as what transpired on the fateful day and the tragedy that followed.
