Curettage: Once the cervix is sufficiently dilated, the doctor will insert a curette, which is a spoon-shaped instrument or a suction device called a vacuum aspiration, into the uterus. The doctor will then gently scrape or suction the lining of the uterus to remove tissue, growths, or to obtain a biopsy sample for further examination.
Recovery: After the procedure, the woman is typically monitored in a recovery area until the effects of anesthesia wear off. Mild cramping, bleeding, and spotting are common after a D&C, and pain medication may be prescribed to manage any discomfort. Most women can resume their normal activities within a day or two, but strenuous physical activities, sexual intercourse, and tampon use are usually advised against for a few weeks.
D&C can be performed for various reasons, including:

Diagnostic purposes: D&C may be used to investigate the cause of abnormal uterine bleeding, such as heavy or prolonged periods, postmenopausal bleeding, or unexplained bleeding between periods. The collected tissue samples can be examined for signs of infection, cancer, or other abnormalities.
Therapeutic purposes: D&C can be used as a treatment method for certain conditions. For example, it may be performed to remove tissue remaining in the uterus after a miscarriage, incomplete abortion, or delivery. D&C can also be used to treat certain noncancerous growths like polyps or fibroids in the uterus.
