Keladi temple itself is more than 1500 year old 16th century temple. The tempe stands as testimony to the immense support given by rulers of that time towards arts and culture and specifically temple architecture.

Keladi is a small village, located at a distance of around 10 km from Sagar town which is near to Shivamoga ( Shimoga ). Keladi was chosen as the first capital of Keladi Nayakas (1500 AD).

The temple was built in the 16th century by the Chowdappa Nayaka and is built in the Hoysala-Dravidian style.

Though the temple is called as Shri Rameshwara temple, the temple complex has three temples.
So Lord Rameshwara temple, Ma Parvati temple, and Lord Veerabhadra are the three principal shrines at Keladi Rameshwara Temple.

The temple has a wide range of carvings that aren't found everywhere. The truth is that a local queen named 'Keladi Chennamma' heroically fought the Sultan warrior Aurangzeb and saved the temple from destruction.
