Body centered cubic (BCC) and face centered cubic (FCC) unit cells are introduced using models. These two unit cells are then broken down into how many atoms are present for each, which atoms are in contact with one another and how to relate the length of the unit cell with the radius of the atoms composing them.
A density problem is solved where the density of aluminum packed in a FCC arrangement is used to find the radius of an aluminum atom.
The atoms at the corner of a unit cell have only 1/8th count towards each unit cell, the atoms on a side count 1/4th, the atoms on a face count 1/2 and any atoms completely internal to the unit cell are not shared and thus count the full atom towards the unit cell.
