Houston is one of the most diverse cities in the country, and it is home to the largest Nigerian population in the United States. It can be hard to move to a place where you don’t know the language or culture, but Wazobia African Market is a home away from home.

The business opened with the hope of being a place where West African families could find ingredients and supplies from home. It is now a grocery store, restaurant, and place of comfort for so many in the area. Owner Tunde Fasina, said, “I saw the customer needs and I thought, where can we as Nigerians go? Give them a store which makes them feel at home and see familiar things, familiar products, familiar people speaking the same language, giving them a nostalgic experience where I am away in another land but I am home.”

Fasina also started the business with the mission to give back. He has given away more than $100,000 in donations and aid. His employees say he has changed their lives forever too, paying for their education and helping them follow their dreams. Fasina said, “When they grow, they now become positive contributors to this same community. And it really doesn’t get any better than that.”
