Emma becomes the dark one so Regina doesn't have to but watching Emma sacrifice herself for her makes Regina come to terms with things she's been feeling for Emma for a long time. She spends all her time searching for Emma and reminiscing on all their missed opportunities. She decides that when she finds Emma she will not waste any more time, however when Emma comes back to Storybrooke she has changed, and they struggle to connect the way they had previously. They both make mistakes trying to reconnect, Emma, as the dark one keeps giving into her darker instincts and so Regina uses the dagger, which Emma sees as a huge betrayal. Regina fears the only way to help is to distance herself and again let Emma go.
