The National Police Academy is the apex police training institute in the country which trains the police leadership of the country. The entrance to the Indian Police Service are graduates from various disciplines, socio-economic strata and all parts of the country.

The young and bright entrants who join the Indian police service are moulded into sensitive and competent police officers. The academy takes pride in being a part of their transformational journey.

This training institute was established right after the Independence in the year 1948 as the Central Police Training College it was re-christened as the National Police Academy in 1967. In 1974 it was named after the Iron Man of the India as Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy. The academy, later re-located to Hyderabad in 1975.

Over an intensive basic course, combining indoor and outdoor training, the Academy ensures that the probationers master the required domain, functional and behavioural competencies that a modern police officer must have.

Indoor training is not confined to classroom teaching alone, it includes hands-on training using simulated crime scenes, state-of-the-art forensics, cyber crime investigation labs, moot court, model police stations and field visits. Trainees experience the actual professional world and the spectrum of roles they would be playing in it.

Outdoor training is just as challenging and diverse. A police officer must be physically and mentally fit and capable in field craft and tactics and dealing with law-and-order situations.

The basic course training lays the strong foundation for the young officers to handle the toughest assignments, be it with state police forces, central armed police forces, elite investigative and intelligence agencies or any other department of the government. This training builds the highest levels of tenacity and endurance pushing trainees to their limits and beyond.

The academy through its focus on attitudinal training, ensures that these police officers discharge their duties with compassion and sensitivity towards people in distress, with an attitude of service and uncompromising ethics and integrity.

The trainees will thus have an insight into their own potential. This revelation is what prepares them to face any challenge with competence and confidence.

If there is one thing that encapsulates the National Police Academy experience, it is this a quote from the famous sculptor, Michelangelo – “The marble already contains a statue, and it's just a question of extracting it.”

The Academy believes that these young minds who join the service already have a fine police officer in them and endeavours to chisel and sculpt this out in the best possible manner.
