Breck Coleman leads hundreds of settlers in a large wagon train from the Mississippi River to their western destination.

Supposedly (the claim has not been confirmed), the initial script, then called "The Oregon Trail", was offered to director John Ford, who passed it on to his friend Raoul Walsh. For the film, Walsh employed 93 actors and up to 725 natives from five different Indian tribes. He also obtained 185 wagons, 1,800 cows, 1,400 horses, 500 buffalo, and 700 chickens, pigs, and dogs for the production of the film. Walsh offered the lead role to actor Gary Cooper, who declined. According to John Ford's later account, Walsh allegedly asked Ford for casting suggestions, to which Ford recommended a then-unknown named John Wayne because he "liked the look of this new kid with a funny walk, like he owned the world."
