House Lawmakers Elect Mike Johnson as Speaker

The stalemate in the House of Representatives ended Wednesday as enough Republicans finally rallied behind Louisiana Rep. Mike Johnson to succeed Kevin McCarthy as speaker.

Johnson was nominated late Tuesday night after Majority Whip Tom Emmer dropped out of the race earlier in the day, and following Majority Leader Steve Scalise and Rep. Jim Jordan's failures to garner enough support to secure the position.

Weeks of GOP infighting had left the chamber unable to function since McCarthy was ousted 3 weeks ago.
