Autumn Maize is mainly grown for silage and fodder production in most parts of Punjab. However, a good fraction but in less acreage than Spring Maize. In this video, we have advised the farmers to acquire maximum production from DK-6789 by sowing it during the end of July. Seed treatment with Hombre (Bayer), planting of Maize at the distance of 7 inches along one side of 24 inch ridges, application of 2 bags of DAP, 1 bag of SOP, 10kg of Sulphur at sowing time, Spray of mixture of Emamectin and Lufenuron days after sowing, application of Zabardast urea days after sowing, application of Reget (Bayer) + 50kg Zabardast Urea 30 days after sowing, granular application of Virtako GR at 40 days after sowing, application of 50kg SOP + 50kg CAN guara at tassling stage at 55 days after sowing. If climatic conditions also favor, the mentioned inputs may lead to 100 maunds per acre of Maize.
Fall army worm (Spodoptera frugiperda) has emerged as a hard-to-kill insect in the maize crop. It is not easily controled through any insecticide espacially on later stages if not properly addressed well in time. No doubt Radiant Arysta @ 80- 100 ml or Daligat of Engro (Spintoram) @ 60 gram/acre, are equally effective but expensive insecticide. They provide effective control, better than most other insecticides but they are expensive. In this video, we have suggested the repeated application at 12 and 20 days after planting of maize fodder. Spra of Emadox –ICI (Indoxacarb+ emamectin) @ 150 ml/acre is a low priced but effective.
Spring crop may only be avoided through early sowing only. March planting of spring maize is also prone to this insect. In view of increased production cost, it has been suggested that government should increase support price of maize crop. Moreover, all the types of fertilizers are gaining price due to inflation. There is a need to take solid steps towards solution of declining agriculture sector of Pakistan to adopt new technologies, to minimize the production costs, to reduce the prices of fertilizers and agriculture machinery. Conventional methods are not fully able to deal with the modern threats related to production of different crops. Policies should be made that promote the agriculture in Pakistan for making progress in the field of agriculture. Production technologies of crops should be modernized to cope with modern threats and shortage of food.
