I am in no way advocating for lying to your employer, nor breaking the law. Certainly, what Ken and Polly did was wrong, as funny a story as it is. But I do love who they were as a couple, and how they changed each other in the process of growing together. They were married for 59 years, from cans of beans to creating Disney Parks. They schemed together, laughed together, and lived a long, rich life.

When Ken had a series of strokes in 1962 that left him paralyzed, Polly would take him on outings to a local park named Descanso Gardens, rolling his wheelchair to a place where he could see the sprawling oak trees. Gazing up at their branches above, Ken found the hope he needed to continue. As he put it, “If the oak trees could contort themselves into lovely shapes, if they could endure, if they were so strong to hold themselves in impossible angles,” then maybe he could, too.

But he never would have gotten there, never would have been inspired by the trees, if it weren’t for Polly.

That’s what love does.

It takes us beyond ourselves. It encourages us to contort ourselves into lovely shapes we wouldn’t be without it. Sometimes it comes from growing around others’ needs, compromising and accommodating them because we care. Sometimes it twists our head around from where our focus was stuck toward a new direction, one we never could have seen if someone hadn’t brought us along with them to see the view.
